“Final Four” Make The Cut: Enviance and Environmental Leader Announce The Advancement of Top Four Schools to Final Round of March Madness Tournament

Remaining “Final Four” Compete to be Named Best Environmental Studies Program in the Nation

CARLSBAD, Calif. and DENVER, Colo.—Enviance, Inc. and Environmental Leader today announced the “Final Four,” in the final round of the first-ever March Madness tournament for Environmental Studies, designed to reward excellence in environmental studies. These schools have survived two elimination rounds, including the “Sustainable 16” two weeks ago, and last week’s “Environmental Eight”, in order to compete for the title of “National Champion.” In order to be advanced to the “Final Four,” schools were scored by the tournament’s expert judges on photo, video and essay submissions sent by students and faculty, in addition to a survey detailing key aspects of each school’s program.

The Final Four are (alphabetically):

  1. Colby College
  2. Colorado State University
  3. Purdue University
  4. Rochester Institute of Technology

“Our “Final Four” schools are working hard to cultivate programs that properly equip the next generation of environmental professionals to succeed in their future careers and help solve the world’s toughest environmental problems,” said Lawrence Goldenhersh, CEO and president of Enviance, and tournament judge. “With the announcement of our “National Champion” just days away, we are extremely excited to honor these winning schools by recognizing their students and faculty for all their hard work in advancing the field of environmental studies.”

Tournament Methodology

The March Madness Tournament for Environmental Studies was designed to evaluate colleges and universities on their academic and sustainability prowess as it relates to the environment, in a format similar to the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament. To be considered, each school submitted a survey response covering topics related to curriculum, graduation rate, facilities and student retention.  The submissions were evaluated by a panel of expert judges, with the combined recommendations determining the “Sustainable 16.”

Those 16 schools were then given the chance to submit essays, photos and videos to the judges, for further consideration to be included in the “Environmental Eight,” as well as the “Final Four”.

Judges for this year’s tournament include:

  • Peter Fox, Principal & Chairman of The Brattle Group
  • Velislava Ivanova, Global Sustainability Practice Director at CH2M HILL
  • Larry Goldenhersh, CEO & President of Enviance
  • Nick Johnson, Managing Consultant at Trinity Consultants
  • Don Cuffel, Manager of Environmental Engineering at Valero/California

The call for submissions has now closed. The “National Champion” will be announced Monday, April 2.

Tournament Prizes

The tournament will award $5,000 to the environmental and sustainability department of one “National Champion,” and send the department chair or member of the faculty on an all-expenses-paid trip to San Diego to attend the Enviance User Conference, April 16-20. While there, the winner will lead a panel titled, “What Tomorrow’s Environmental Leaders Need to Know.”

Environmental Leader, Top Green Trade Publication, Announces Site Re-Launch

FORT COLLINS, CO – December 10, 2007 – Environmental Leader, the daily online trade publication that reports on corporate environmental initiatives, today announced a major re-launch of its Website and daily newsletter. The launch is intended to give Environmental Leader readers the most comprehensive resource for tracking environment-related business news.

Coming on the occasion of its first anniversary, Environmental Leader has (www.environmentalleader.com) broadened its coverage of the impact the green wave is having on business. With the site’s enhancements and redesign, users can access the news of the day through a variety of media including text, images, video, and cutting-edge research.

New categories such as Finance & Reporting, Strategy & Leadership, Today’s Video and Today’s Trend, a daily chart that details the latest industry data, make it easy for executives to quickly find the information they need to successfully improve energy efficiency, market green products, and run sustainable organizations.

“The extraordinary success we’ve enjoyed over the last year is due to an unmatched team of editors using their time-tested judgment to uncover and put into perspective the most significant stories, which are updated throughout the day,” says Paul Nastu, Publisher and Managing Editor. “They focus on the stories that impact our specific readers, thousands of environmental and sustainability executives at companies like GE, Wells Fargo, Wal-Mart, SC Johnson, Yum Brands, JC Penney, and HP, who need vastly different news than clean tech investors and consumers. Reaching these executives is usually a difficult proposition for advertisers. Environmental Leader makes it easy.”

  • More than 75% of respondents have complete control, significant control or recommendation authority over energy efficiency and sustainability spending.
  • 75% of respondents visit Environmental Leader at least once-per-day, making it the go-to source for daily news on corporate environmental initiatives.
  • 30% of respondents work for companies with annual revenues of more than $1 billion
  • 70% of respondents have a leadership position in their companies.
  • More than 30% of respondents control budgets of more than $1 million
